For me, experiencing and thinking about color invigorates life in an increasingly fast-paced and disposable world. I have tried to make paintings that are objects of subtle and energetic color; explore a language worth listening to. The simplicity of the rectangle seemed best suited for these explorations. Hopefully the paintings are a pause in time, a private place where a viewer can bask in the vitality and soothingness of color and its adventures.

Joan Mellon's work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art / Franklin Furnace Archives, the New York Public Library / Artist's books Collection, the School of visual Arts, and private collections.

Blue lagoons encircle me
in the coolness of your orange arms
swallow me so I can breathe
breezes of the cobalt sun

suck me in and swirl me round
salt sweet lips salacious eyes
sing me Sarah's lullaby
in the twilight of my liguid cave
